E-Bike Cuts Out on Hills (500C)

Causes + how to fix it

Quick answer

Power drops out when the motor is working hardest. Most likely cause: battery voltage dropping under heavy load, or the system protecting itself from too much current or heat. Try this first: start the climb with a full battery.

Try this first

Free, and each takes under 5 minutes.

  1. Start the climb with a full battery
  2. Watch the display when it cuts out
  3. Shift to an easier gear and pedal more

In plain English

Climbing makes the motor pull far more current than riding on the flat. A worn or partly charged battery can't hold its voltage under that load, so it dips and power drops out, often coming back a second later. The system can also cut power if it gets too hot. Loose connectors that lose contact under load cause the same symptom.
